Five budget-friendly activities to enjoy with the kids

Happy family sitting on sofa and using laptop, mobile phone and digital tablet at home

Family nights are a great way to get everyone together in one room to enjoy some quality time. Whether you are heading out to a play, taking in a music festival or just playing a board game at home, connecting with your family is essential, but that doesn't mean you should break the bank to do it. There are plenty of great ways to be together as a family while keeping your family's budget intact.

Check out your local library

Keeping kids entertained during extended school breaks can always be a challenge, especially if you are living on a budget. To keep the costs down, check out your local library for classes, events, and specialty workshops. Often the library hosts events on site, but they may also have valuable information about what's going on around town. Check the bulletin board and library website for updated information.

Have fun at home

You can keep things cheap by keeping the kids at home, but that doesn't mean you can't have an epic family night. Consider hosting a building competition. Dump out all of the blocks you have in the house and let the entire family have some fun building towers and buildings. If you'd like your event to be more structured, you can even pick a theme for the evening, like outer space, or farming. To keep the night flowing, consider baking brownies. The entire evening of family bonding can cost less than $10 if you have the blocks on hand.

Plan a family campout

Warm weather is the perfect reason to get the family outside, but you don't have to head into the wilderness to enjoy some outdoor fun. Plan a family campout right in your own backyard, complete with s’mores and a night out in a tent. If you have a tent on hand, you can get the entire event off the ground for under $10. If you don't have a tent on hand, don't fret, they can often be found at discounted prices at your local sporting goods store.

Keep Groupon on your phone

Groupon has plenty of family-friendly events at discounted prices. Keep an eye out regularly to score great deals on everything from theme park tickets to kid-friendly festivals and plays. You can even create filters to ensure you only see events that are designated for the whole family.

Queue up Netflix and order a pizza

Netflix isn't just for people looking to binge-watch the latest obsession. The streaming service has a variety of family-friendly movies and television shows that would make a perfect family event. To make things special, throw some pillows on the floor, order a pizza and dim the lights. Not only will you create an authentic movie theater experience in your home, but you can pause the flick whenever the kids need to get up and move around.

Balancing your budget with family fun can be difficult. These family-friendly events might help you plan out the perfect event for your squad, without dipping into your savings.
