Toll Road Text Scams

Toll Road Text Scams
Don’t Get Taken for a Ride

You’re going about your day when a text arrives:
"You have an unpaid toll. Pay now to avoid late fees: [suspicious link]"

It looks official. It even mentions a real toll authority or includes your license plate number. But it’s not real—it’s a scam.

Toll road text scams are on the rise, and fraudsters are counting on people to panic and pay up without thinking. Here’s how to protect yourself.

What Is a Toll Road Text Scam?

Scammers send fake text messages pretending to be from legitimate toll authorities like E-ZPass, TxTag, or state departments of transportation. The message may claim you owe a toll fee or have a balance due, and it includes a link to "pay now."

But if you click that link, you’re taken to a fake website designed to steal your personal or payment information.

Signs It’s a Scam
  • The message comes from a random phone number, not a verified toll service.

  • There’s a sense of urgency, like “Pay immediately or face fines.”

  • The link doesn’t go to an official .gov or .org website.

  • You receive a notice even if you haven’t driven on a toll road recently.

How to Protect Yourself
  • Don’t Click the Link: If you receive a toll-related text, don’t click on any links—especially if you don’t recognize the sender.
  • Verify Through the Official Source: If you think the message might be real, go directly to the official toll authority’s website or call their customer service. Never trust the link provided in the message.
  • Watch Your Debit and Credit Card Activity: Using ONE Wallet, monitor your accounts and set up alerts. If you spot a suspicious charge, contact us immediately.
  • Report the Scam: Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it to your mobile carrier.
