Romance Scams
Romance Scams
What You Need to Know
Romance scams are one of the most emotionally and financially devastating types of fraud. Scammers prey on loneliness, trust, and love—often using fake identities and elaborate stories to build relationships with their victims online.
Whether you're on a dating site, social media, or even playing an online game, it's important to know how these scams work and how to protect yourself.
How Romance Scams Work
Fraudsters typically create a fake profile using stolen photos and details. They reach out through dating platforms, social media, or messaging apps and quickly work to build a deep connection.
Once trust is established, the scammer introduces a crisis—a medical emergency, a stranded travel situation, or an investment opportunity—and asks for money. They may even try to access your bank account or credit card information directly.
Common Red Flags
-
They profess love quickly—even within days or weeks.
-
They avoid meeting in person or video chatting.
-
Their stories are vague, dramatic, or involve frequent “emergencies.”
-
They ask for money, gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
-
They try to isolate you from friends or family who express concern.
How to Stay Protected
-
Be cautious about sharing personal or financial information online.
-
Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person.
-
Use reverse image searches to check if their photos are stolen.
-
Talk to someone you trust before taking action—scammers want secrecy.
-
Report suspicious behavior immediately if you've shared information.
