Double-Sided Spoofing
Double-Sided Spoofing
What You Need to Know
Fraudsters are using a sophisticated tactic called double-sided spoofing, and business banking customers are a prime target.
How It Works
Scammers spoof our phone number and call your business, pretending to be Independent Bank. They may say there's unusual account activity or ask to verify a transaction. At the same time, they contact us pretending to be you—armed with just enough info to attempt a transfer or change account settings.
By impersonating both sides, they create a sense of urgency and confusion, pressuring your staff into sharing sensitive information or authorizing fraudulent activity.
Why Businesses Are Targeted
Business accounts often move larger sums of money and may have multiple employees handling transactions—making them more vulnerable. Fraudsters exploit busy environments, authority structures, and employees who may not recognize red flags.
How to Stay Protected
-
Verify requests independently. If someone calls claiming to be the bank, hang up and call us back using a known number.
-
Never share authentication codes. We will never ask for one.
-
Train your team. Make sure all employees handling financial info know how to spot and report suspicious activity.
-
Use Positive Pay. Our fraud prevention tools can help catch fraudulent checks and ACH transactions before they post.
-
Monitor accounts daily. Quick action can reduce losses if fraud occurs.
