William (Brad) Kessel, President and CEO of West Michigan-based Independent Bank, is being recognized as the 2025 Banker of the Year by the Michigan Bankers Association. The MBA Board of Directors awarded Brad this prestigious honor in recognition of his outstanding dedication to the MBA, significant contributions to the banking industry, the remarkable success of Independent Bank, and his exemplary record of community service.
Brad joined Independent Bank in 1994 and was promoted to executive leadership in 2024. In 2011, he was appointed president of the Bank and its holding company, Independent Bank Corporation, and was named CEO in 2013. Brad has been an active MBA leader throughout his career, serving on the MBA Board of Directors, including as MBA Chairman from 2021-2022.
Under Brad's leadership, Independent Bank has implemented several remarkable initiatives that have strengthened Michigan communities. Over the past nine years, the Bank has participated in "Be the Difference Day," where all employees volunteer at various non-profit organizations throughout the state. The Bank has also donated more than $1 million over the past nine years to more than 80 Michigan non-profits during Be the Difference Day.
Brad was also recently recognized as one of the 200 Most Influential Leaders in West Michigan for 2024 by Crain's Grand Rapids Business.
