Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

During 2021 we developed our Employee Value Proposition (EVP), DEI Commitment, and our 2022 DEI Strategies. Specifically, the following portion of our EVP speaks to our commitment to DEI:

DEI Commitment:

Be You. At Independent Bank we promote a culture that encourages and embraces the collective sum of your individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, innovation, self-expression, unique capabilities and talent. We value diversity of thought, ideas, and background. Our inclusive and collaborative culture helps us find the best solutions to meet the needs of our employees, customers, community, and company.

 

Because words are meaningless and empty without action we developed the following 2022 DEI goals and have already begun making progress against them.


2022 DEI Goals:

 

The following are our DEI goals for 2022. Each of these goals have specific strategic action items we will work toward to help us achieve our goals.

 

Support diversity and equity initiatives in our communities.
  • Continue IB’s $1 million My Home Rewards program that subsidizes closing costs and promotes homeownership in diverse and lower income communities throughout our footprint.
  • Diversify the mortgage sales team and expand community outreach.
  • Design and implement a small business diversity outreach program throughout our footprint to include our support of Michigan’s Women Forward.
  • Support various events in diverse neighborhoods within our footprint, including the 2022 production of X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X at the Detroit Opera.
Improve the diversity among our internal and external applicants.
  • Expand and diversify of the sources we utilize and network with to attract talent.
  • We put this into action beginning with the sourcing of our intern applicants for our internship program. Specifically, we expanded the list of colleges and universities we partner with and reached out to 70 diversity-related student organizations and attended a diversity-oriented career fair.
Increase the number of diverse vendors we do business with.
  • Partner with existing vendor organizations to assist with broadening the pool of diverse vendors.
  • Enhance awareness by compiling and publishing lists of diverse vendors that provide services Independent Bank needs so they can be considered as contracts are negotiated.
  • Monitor ESG and DEI initiatives at significant, primarily publicly held, vendors.
  • Request diverse representatives for Independent Bank services provided by our vendors.
  • Invest in our employees, appreciating their individual differences
  • Continue DEI training for all employees.

During 2021, we continued our journey to further foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture and environment by continuing to assign all new hires our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training and Effective Interviewing e-courses, as well as a leadership development course focused on inclusive leadership.
